Global Packaging

In 2020, we eliminated 350,000lbs of Styrofoam from our packaging assemblies, a material that is not easily recycled by customers, through efforts like updating our worksurface packaging assembly.

Our goal is to move to 100% recyclable packaging by 2025, which will positively impact our customers’ zero waste to landfill goals.

LEED/WELL Certification Contributions

HNI products help customers pursue LEED® green building rating system and WELL Building Standard™ certifications in several important areas.

Responsible Sourcing Efforts

We are in the process of enhancing our supplier code of conduct to increase our expectations and requirements for suppliers in the areas of legal compliance, business integrity, and social and sustainability leadership.  Annual certifications will be solicited from suppliers to ensure continued compliance, and we have set a goal to achieve 100% annual compliance by 2022.

Supplier Diversity:
  • 3-Year average = 50% spend with small businesses
  • 11% with suppliers certified with a socio-economic status

HNI family of companies maintain various levels of supplier diversity, for both direct and indirect supply chain requirements. At HNI, we recognize the value of offering opportunities to small, minority, woman owned and other historically disadvantaged businesses that meet our primary objective of superior product quality.

HNI actively evaluates global supply sources and their abilities to offer cost reduction, without sacrifice to our primary objective of superior product quality. Our philosophy is to select trading partners based on capabilities and essential business criteria.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Throughout our product development and manufacturing operations, we utilize a number of “reduce, reuse, and recycle” strategies, including:

  • We combine recycled wood with resin to create seating components which help divert several thousand tons of lumber waste annually.
  • Some of our product components may contain as much as 75% recycled aluminum, 78% recycled steel, and 90% recycled particle board.
  • Select fabrics feature Repreve fibers, made from recycled plastic bottles. Our Hamilton fabric pattern contains 13 recycled bottles per yard.
  • Many of our storage counterweights contain scrap plastic from our seating operations. Nearly 10,000lbs of scrap plastic is reused in these components annually.
Furniture End-Of-Use

We take pride in designing products made to last. That said, when our clients are ready for a change, many prefer an end of life option other than landfill disposal for used furniture in good condition.

We developed a program with ANEW, a nonprofit organization that repurposes surplus office furniture, fixtures, and equipment to local organizations and public service agencies in need.

Charitable and Community Giving

  • Our charitable giving averages 1% of pre-tax profits annually, supporting environmental, educational, civic, and health and human services projects in communities where we operate.
  • Throughout HNI, members volunteer as individuals and groups to causes important to them. From corporate donations to member community involvement, HNI members impact nearly 100 organizations each year.
  • Since 2002, we’ve raised over $6 million for the City of Hope, an independent cancer research and treatment center. We raised a record $655,000 in 2019.

Diversity and Inclusion

  • We value using each other’s differences in experiences and ideas to solve problems and better serve our customers.
  • Five of nine board members are women or ethnic minorities.
  • In 2020, we signed the “CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion Pledge” to advance diversity and inclusion and joined the EPIC Corporate Challenge through Women Lead Change to advance diversity, inclusion, and leadership opportunities for women and minorities.
  • Our employee resource groups, like our Women in STEM group, help us advance our efforts and empower employees to reach their full potential.
